What it replaces
Pricey research ELNs Carbonless paper lab books Scan-and-email submissions
Right-sized

Built for the teaching lab — not the pharma lab.

Research ELNs are powerful and priced to match. Paper lab books add up over a program and still have to be scanned. Lab Notebook is the option that actually fits a course.

Research ELNs

Overkill for a course

Built for industry and research labs — compliance features, and pricing to match. More than a class needs, at a cost no student should carry.

Paper lab notebooks

Costly, and stuck on paper

Carbonless copy books add up semester after semester, get lost or stained, and still have to be photographed or scanned to turn anything in.

Lab Notebook
For the classroom

Affordable and Canvas-native

A digital notebook priced for students, on any device, that turns itself in to Canvas as a PDF — no scanner, no research-grade overhead.

The notebook

A page that works the way lab actually does.

Not a rigid web form. A free-form page where a write-up, a labeled sketch, and two gels side by side can sit exactly where they make sense.

Free-form pages

Lay it out like a real notebook.

Add text and photos, then drag and resize them into place. Put two microscope images next to each other, highlight a heading, and keep your discussion right beside the data.

Phone photos

Photos, straight off the phone.

Scan a QR code on the page and upload from your phone — the image lands on the notebook in seconds. No cables, no emailing yourself, no fighting a file picker.

Canvas submit

One click, and it's turned in.

Sign in with Canvas, pick the assignment, and submit. The entry becomes a tidy PDF in the student's own submission — graded in SpeedGrader, with nothing new for anyone to learn.

Course notebooks & instructor view

Organized by course — for students and instructors.

Every class gets its own notebook, sorted by course and assignment. Instructors can switch to any student's notebook, by course, right where they grade.

Two sides of the lab

Cheaper for students. Easier for professors.

For students

A lab notebook that doesn't cost like a textbook.

Skip the pricey carbonless lab book and the research ELN you'll never fully use. Write up labs anywhere and turn them in from your phone — for a fraction of the cost.

  • Works on your phone, laptop, or a library computer
  • Nothing to print, buy, or carry between classes
  • Sign in with Canvas — no new account or password
For professors

Grade where you already go.

Entries arrive in Canvas as clean PDFs and open in SpeedGrader — the same place you grade everything else. Nothing new to install, and no separate gradebook to reconcile.

  • Grade in SpeedGrader, alongside the rest of the course
  • Open any student's notebook, sorted by course
  • A least-privilege Canvas connection you can trust
How it works

Three steps, start to submitted.

1

Write it up

Open a new entry, give it a title, and lay out your procedure, observations, and results on the page.

2

Add the photos

Snap the QR code and send images from your phone, or drop them in from the computer. Arrange them however you like.

3

Submit to Canvas

Choose the assignment and hit submit. It lands in Canvas as a PDF, ready to grade in SpeedGrader.

Canvas & privacy

Canvas-native, and least-privilege by design.

Students sign in with their existing Canvas account — no new password to manage, and no data to reconcile.

  • Only the student's own work. The app submits a student's entry to their own assignment — it can't reach grades or anyone else's submissions.
  • Six scopes, nothing more. The Canvas connection is limited to exactly what turning in a PDF requires.
  • Nothing new to learn. Submissions show up in the normal gradebook and SpeedGrader.
